Educational Surfaces: Aesthetics Matter

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Many classrooms and even dorm rooms are not only unattractive, but also uninspiring. Many of these rooms were built based on functional needs and budgetary restraints. They were poorly designed and, in many cases, have been poorly maintained. But students don’t need an aesthetically pleasing room in which to learn, right? Wrong.

One major aspect of education continues to go overlooked; aesthetics is not just about what is appealing to the eye, but also what is appealing to the senses. Aesthetic comes from the Greek word: Aistehesis, which means recognition via senses. Aesthetics have a positive effect on learning.

Studies show:

1.    That pupils with plenty of daylight in the classroom learn up to 21 percent more than pupils with less daylight.

2.   That noise has a negative impact on the behavior of the pupils

3.    That a fuzzy physical environment with a lot of strong colors results in jumpy children

4.   That senses are activated by diversity

5.    That bullying is worse in sad asphalted schoolyards than in well ordered, challenging and varying outdoor areas.

But most importantly, studies have shown that there is a direct connection between feelings and learning. A good atmosphere in the classroom creates better learning.

To perform any job correctly, you need to have an environment that’s both durable and good looking.

A.S.S.T.’s products and services are the perfect fit for educational buildings and locations that require solid surface counters, shower surrounds, bathroom partitions and more.

In addition, we’re capable of producing high-quality casework for everything from the reception room to the science laboratory. The materials we use are durable and easy to clean and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

A.S.S.T. and Healthcare

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Numerous studies within the medical, healthcare and design communities have shown that there is a direct link between a soothing, peaceful environment and the healing process. Patients in aesthetically pleasing surroundings require less pain medication than those in sterile, unappealing environments. This proves that there is a distinct connection between patients’ physical environment and their ability to heal.

For that reason, many hospitals and healthcare centers have begun to incorporate art and other aesthetically pleasing accent pieces throughout their facilities, creating a calming experience for their patients.

A.S.S.T. can help you meet those challenges by providing architectural millwork, plastic laminate casework, or whatever fixtures your business requires.

Customer Testimonial: South Shore Millwork Custom Baptismal Font

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Bill & The ASST team,

I have the Font, and I must say it is far more impressive now that I have my hands on it.

Absolutely beautiful, Hats off to you and your craftsmen who put it together, above and beyond anything we could have hoped for. Simply a work of art. – Michael Chase, South Shore Millwork project manager

The Project

South Shore Millwork in Norton Massachusetts had a project at Christ the King Church in Mashpee, Maine on Cape Cod that required a corian  baptismal font. They employed A.S.S.T. to create the custom font.

South Shore Millwork provided the drawings that A.S.S.T. worked from.

A.S.S.T. made the font from corian venaro white and cameo white. The thermoformed bowl portion of the font was cameo white while everything else was made from corian venaro white.

A.S.S.T. had to custom make a mold to thermoform the bowl while South Shore supplied the mahogany that was used to inlay the crosses in the faces of the font. The final product is pictured below…

How Interior Design Affects Communication and Mood

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

A room needs to be more than just a room. The architecture needs to be able to influence the mind and manipulate the senses. But that’s a mighty tall order for a room, right? Well, not really.

Architects have long intuited that the places we inhabit can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. And you know what, they were right. Visual-aesthetic surroundings have significant effects on persons exposed to them.

Lighting, perception of space, and color all play a role in how people perceive a given room and how that room will affect their mood.

Lighting: It can affect the way a person acts and feels. A study conducted by the College of Humanities and Sciences at Nihon University in Tokyo found that dim lighting evokes a more relaxed feeling in people. Conversely, bright light causes a sense of uneasiness. This is why many fast food places, looking for quick turnaround, utilize bright lighting.

Color: One could write books on the way color affects mood. But as we just have a few hundred words, here is the quick version…

•      Red is intense and attracts attention.

•      Blue is relaxing and evokes trust.

•      Green is linked with nature and is easy on the eyes.

•      Yellow can strain the eye but at the same time can increase concentration.

•      Paler colors are more likely to enhance the perception of space in a room.

The secret is to find a color that best accents the purpose of your room.

Perception of space: Crowded rooms are more likely to have an adverse effect on mood than spacious rooms. Factors that are likely to increase the perception of being closed in or crowded include low ceilings, small windows and lack of natural light, stuffy overheated rooms, rooms that are narrow or rooms where there is too much furniture and other items crammed into the available space.

So next time you are designing a room, take a moment to consider the impact each element will have on your customer/client’s mood. And if you are looking for the perfect addition to your new room, turn to A.S.S.T for help.

A.S.S.T.’s solutions are perfect for a variety of different industries, and we’re always willing to meet with a potential client to determine how our products and services can meet their needs. We bond and insure all of our work, so you don’t have to worry about those details.
