The Importance of a Good Educational Environment

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

The learning environment comprises three components:

1.     The human environment, including teacher and child,

2.     The resource materials, and

3.     The built environment.

In certain cases, the built environment can actually have more of an effect on learning than the material or even the teacher. Poor physical conditions – broken windows, leaking roofs, and even dull/boring colors – send strong signals that children aren’t worth it and that education is a dead end.  A bad indoor climate can have an extremely negative effect on learning.

Conversely, a positive and nurturing environment, when used in conjunction with effective teaching methods, can promote learning and actually improve recall and attention by up to 80%. If you feel good in an educational situation, you are more likely to absorb the material. Research has shown that a positive indoor environment has a positive effect on learning.

To perform any job correctly, you need to have an environment that’s not only good-looking, but also functional. This is especially true in the world of academia. Aesthetically pleasing surroundings stimulate the senses and thus promote learning.
