Vacuum Thermoforming :: Pressure Thermoforming :: Mechanical Thermoforming

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

What is thermoforming?

Well, thermoforming is the process of heating and molding temperature-sensitive materials to create a new, usable product. This process uses sheets of a polymer called thermoplastic, which is heated to increase pliability. Once the desired level of heat is met, the material is molded by one of three methods:

Vacuum Thermoforming: the sheet of material is laid on a concave mold and pulled inward to adhere to the shape of the mold with vacuum pressure. Tiny holes in the mold provide the suction, without affecting the shape of the finished product

Pressure Thermoforming: the sheet is laid on a convex mold shape and pressed down on the mold

Mechanical Thermoforming: uses a machine to press the sheet into a concave mold with a convex mold, pressing the sheet between the two molds.

Once the thermoplastic cools, it once again becomes extremely hard. Common products made by thermoforming include bathtubs, shower stalls and boat hulls.

Does Your Right Hand Know What Your Left Hand is Doing?

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Did you ever hear the saying…”your right hand doesn’t know what your left hand is doing”? People tend to use that saying to describe a state of confusion. Many times I use it to describe the construction industry. Don’t get me wrong, I live and breathe the construction industry and am positive about the industry’s condition today and in the future.

Here’s a right hand/left hand example. We are working on a project where the design called for the ceiling to be filled with HVAC equipment leaving no room for the lighting fixtures. Not a good situation. How the conflict arose might never be known.  What is certain is that the complexities of design changes to please an owner and mechanical requirements to provide a climate controlled building created a conflict.   Everyone was working with the best of intentions, yet the design remained in conflict with reality. With more collaboration, I think these types of events can be discovered and resolved in the preconstruction and budgeting phase of projects.

At A.S.S.T., we help our customers deal with problems like this all the time. Not just to solve the existing problem but to prevent problems from happening in the future.

The only way we can be real problem solvers though is if our customers bring us into the project earlier rather than later. That way, we may foresee a problem and suggest the use of 3D software. Or, we may suggest an innovative product like Sculptcor, made from Corian. A.S.S.T. is the only manufacturer of Sculptcor where we use a unique process to apply heat and pressure to the Corian to give it a 3 dimensional surface. The result is an exciting, textured and durable surface that will endure for many years. If we are brought in early, we can let the right hand know what the left hand is planning so that both hands can work together.

If you know other right hand/left hand examples from the construction industry, please let me know at russberry@asst.com.

The Importance of Aesthetics in Retail Settings

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Sometimes, the aesthetics of your retail environment has just as much (if not more) to do with your success as the quality of the product you are selling. Packaging, or in this case, the environment can greatly influence a buyers emotions and can be the difference between a making and losing a sale. And with 40% of all Americans admitting to be impulse buyers, retail aesthetics can play a major role in the profitability of your business.

So when designing your store’s interior, take the following aesthetic elements into account and help maximize your ability to turn a profit:

  • Wall colors
  • Aisle widths
  • Display-rack heights
  • Merchandised focal points
  • Ambient lighting
  • Artistic arrangement of products
  • Checkout counters
  • Signage

The right retail aesthetics can take your store from ordinary to extraordinary!

Displaying products in a retail environment takes creativity and customization – two areas where A.S.S.T. shines. We’ve worked with the biggest retailers in the world, and their vendors, to create attractive retail displays that entertain and influence customers to make a purchase.

Our on-site workshop allows us to integrate metal, plastic, glass, veneer and more into a display. So what you want is what you get, and that’s what entices customers to buy.

Don’t forget that we’re also experts at providing solutions for “behind the scenes” of any retail establishment, this include bathroom partitions, cabinets and workspaces and modular vanity systems.

Make your products produce sales – contact A.S.S.T. today for displays that dazzle.

Aesthetics and Education: The Importance of an Aesthetically Pleasing Educational Environment

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Research has shown that a positive physical environment has a positive effect on learning. In fact, the educational environment can sometimes have an even more profound effect on students than the material and even the teacher.

  • Poor physical conditions – broken windows, leaking roofs, and even dull/boring colors – send strong signals that children aren’t worth it and that education is a dead end.
  • Positive and nurturing environments, when used in conjunction with effective teaching methods, can promote learning and actually improve recall and attention by up to 80%.

Aesthetic comes from the Greek word: Aistehesis, which means recognition via senses. Aesthetics have a positive effect on learning. Yet, countless schools ignore the need for aesthetically pleasing and nurturing environments. Educational facilities are ill-kempt and classrooms are overcrowded. And we wonder why American education seems to be on the decline.

While we at A.S.S.T. cannot do anything for the overcrowded classrooms, we can address the physical educational environment.

A.S.S.T.’s products and services are the perfect fit for educational buildings and locations that require wall panels, solid surface counters, shower surrounds, bathroom partitions and more. In addition, we’re capable of producing high-quality casework for everything from the reception room to the science laboratory. The materials we use are durable and easy to clean and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

The Importance of Aesthetics in the Food Industry

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

In the food industry, image is everything. This is especially true when it comes to running your own restaurant, which not only needs to be fully functional, but also appealing to the eye, as well. Even if you cook the best food known to man, your business will struggle without an aesthetically pleasing area in which to serve your customers.

An effective Restaurant Décor can accomplish a lot, including:

Sets the Mood: Interior restaurant design allows you to dictate the mood and setting of your establishment. Will it be a quite, romantic restaurant? Will it be a modern, trendy place to eat? The choice is your. And it all begins with your décor.

Key Demographic: Similar to setting the mood, targeting a key demographic is first done through design. How your building’s exterior and interior look will dictate your clientele. So whom do you want to cater to?

Keeps Customers Coming Back: The right food combined with the right restaurant design will keep your customers coming back for more!

This is where A.S.S.T. can help.
