Teacher Appreciation Week: Creating a more Productive Learning Environment

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

From everyone here at A.S.S.T., we would like to thank all of the hardworking teachers out there. We wish you all a very happy Teacher Appreciation Week! So in honor of teacher appreciation week, we at A.S.S.T. decided to focus this week’s blog on how to create a positive and productive learning environment.

Tips for Improving the Classroom, Fostering a Better Learning Environment

  1. Good learning starts with good educational materials. Unfortunately, with budget cuts, this part is somewhat out of your control. What you can do, however, is come up with creative and visually appealing ways to stimulate your students.
  2. Stay positive. Showing your students a positive attitude will give them confidence and help foster a positive feeling towards education.
  3. Create an aesthetically physical learning environment

The Physical Learning Environments Impact on a Student’s Ability to Learn and Retain Information

  • Poor Conditions: Poor physical conditions send students strong signals that they aren’t worth it and that education is a dead end.
  • Positive Conditions: When used in conjunction with effective teaching methods (Thanks again Teachers!), a positive and nurturing physical environment can promote learning and improve recall and attention by as much as 80%.

How A.S.S.T. can Help Create a more Stimulating Physical Learning Environment

A.S.S.T.’s products and services are the perfect fit for educational buildings and locations that require wall panels, solid surface counters, shower surrounds, bathroom partitions and more. In addition, we’re capable of producing high-quality casework for everything from the reception room to the science laboratory. The materials we use are durable and easy to clean and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Vacuum Thermoforming :: Pressure Thermoforming :: Mechanical Thermoforming

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

What is thermoforming?

Well, thermoforming is the process of heating and molding temperature-sensitive materials to create a new, usable product. This process uses sheets of a polymer called thermoplastic, which is heated to increase pliability. Once the desired level of heat is met, the material is molded by one of three methods:

Vacuum Thermoforming: the sheet of material is laid on a concave mold and pulled inward to adhere to the shape of the mold with vacuum pressure. Tiny holes in the mold provide the suction, without affecting the shape of the finished product

Pressure Thermoforming: the sheet is laid on a convex mold shape and pressed down on the mold

Mechanical Thermoforming: uses a machine to press the sheet into a concave mold with a convex mold, pressing the sheet between the two molds.

Once the thermoplastic cools, it once again becomes extremely hard. Common products made by thermoforming include bathtubs, shower stalls and boat hulls.

Does Your Right Hand Know What Your Left Hand is Doing?

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Did you ever hear the saying…”your right hand doesn’t know what your left hand is doing”? People tend to use that saying to describe a state of confusion. Many times I use it to describe the construction industry. Don’t get me wrong, I live and breathe the construction industry and am positive about the industry’s condition today and in the future.

Here’s a right hand/left hand example. We are working on a project where the design called for the ceiling to be filled with HVAC equipment leaving no room for the lighting fixtures. Not a good situation. How the conflict arose might never be known.  What is certain is that the complexities of design changes to please an owner and mechanical requirements to provide a climate controlled building created a conflict.   Everyone was working with the best of intentions, yet the design remained in conflict with reality. With more collaboration, I think these types of events can be discovered and resolved in the preconstruction and budgeting phase of projects.

At A.S.S.T., we help our customers deal with problems like this all the time. Not just to solve the existing problem but to prevent problems from happening in the future.

The only way we can be real problem solvers though is if our customers bring us into the project earlier rather than later. That way, we may foresee a problem and suggest the use of 3D software. Or, we may suggest an innovative product like Sculptcor, made from Corian. A.S.S.T. is the only manufacturer of Sculptcor where we use a unique process to apply heat and pressure to the Corian to give it a 3 dimensional surface. The result is an exciting, textured and durable surface that will endure for many years. If we are brought in early, we can let the right hand know what the left hand is planning so that both hands can work together.

If you know other right hand/left hand examples from the construction industry, please let me know at russberry@asst.com.

Healthcare Facility Technology: Baby Bathing Bowls

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

A baby’s first bath needs to be calm, soothing, and, most importantly, safe. This is the challenge that many healthcare facilities face. How do you accomplish all three of these aspects?

The answer: A Custom Baby Bathing Bowl from A.S.S.T.

A.S.S.T. and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Towson, Maryland worked together to design a baby bathing bowl that benefits both the child and the caregiver. Each of our bowls is custom created and integrated into the existing décor.

Other benefits of these Baby Bowls include:

  • Each bowl is integrated into the countertop of the healthcare facility.
  • The bowl has an indentation for the child’s head and bottom to create a safe, secure environment.
  • Nurses and health care providers won’t have to bend, kneel or hunch over when bathing the child, preventing nagging aches and pains.
  • Since the child’s head and bottom are safely positioned, health care providers can use both hands during the entire bathing procedure.
  • A.S.S.T.’s Baby Bathing Bowls ensure that everyone feels good at bath time.

Bring safety, security and soothing calm to your hospital’s most precious clients with a Baby Bathing Bowl from A.S.S.T.!

Solid Surface Countertops

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

An effective countertop material needs to be durable, functional, and aesthetically appealing. While this may seem impossible to accomplish with a single material, it is actually quite possible with Solid Surface – a manmade product consisting of resin, an acrylic or modified polyester, alumina trihydrate, color pigments, and added particles.

Benefits of Solid Surface

  • Limitless Options: Solid Surface can be machined and molded into almost any shape imaginable
  • Incredibly Versatility: Solid Surface comes numerous texture and color variations
  • Nonporous: Solid Surface keeps bacteria and mold away
  • Low Maintenance: Solid Surface requires only soap and water cleanup
  • Stain Resistant
  • Chemical Resistant
  • Scratch Resistant
  • Durable: There is no finish that can slowly fade or chip away. The texture and color is consistent throughout the solid surface material
  • Class 1 Fire Rating

The only drawback of Solid Surface is that is is almost impossible for do-it-yourself remodelers to fabricate.

This is where a company like A.S.S.T. can help!

Our trained craftsmen can turn out virtually anything you want, thanks to our modern facilities and workshops. Tight timetables and last minute jobs are no problem at A.S.S.T. thanks to our experienced team. We can design and build the right solution in the right amount of time.
